History of old Dubrovnik summer residences
Outside of city walls, in Lapad and Gruz towards Cavtat and Slano on the other side since 14th century, Dubrovnik families have build 300 summer houses and residences. In the beginning they were build like houses of landowners and later as residences for reading and art. In these houses Dubrovnik renaissance literature, philosophy and culture were born. These kind of Gothic, gothic-renaissance buildings were mostly similarly build with large terraces, gardens all this representing architectural achievements in this part of Mediterranean. Today most of them are abandoned and devastated but there are still those that have been renovated and well kept, in which people live or use for tourism.
